Farrage Lies About Swans

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, recently made claims that immigrants, particularly from Eastern Europe, are stealing and eating swans and carp from Royal Parks in the UK.

This assertion has sparked significant debate and scrutiny, with various sources fact-checking the validity of his statements.

Claims Made by Farage

During an interview on LBC, Farage suggested that "swans were being eaten in Royal Parks" and that "carp were being taken out of ponds and eaten" by individuals from cultures where such practices are acceptable. He implied that these actions were happening in the UK, specifically attributing them to Eastern European migrants.

Responses from Authorities

Royal Parks and RSPCA Statements

Both the Royal Parks and the RSPCA have categorically denied any reports of swans being killed or eaten in London's Royal Parks. A spokesperson for the Royal Parks stated, "We’ve not had any incidents reported to us of people killing or eating swans in London’s eight Royal Parks" and emphasized their commitment to the welfare of the swans through collaboration with the Swan Sanctuary.

The RSPCA also addressed a viral video that purportedly showed migrants cooking a bird, clarifying that the footage was from a television show aired 15 years ago, not a recent incident involving immigrants.

Historical Context of the Claims

Farage's comments are not new; they echo a narrative that has circulated for over two decades. A notable instance occurred in 2003 when The Sun newspaper published a sensational headline claiming that asylum seekers were barbecuing swans. This story was later discredited, with the press regulator finding no evidence to support the allegations, leading to a correction from the newspaper itself.

Experts have pointed out that such claims often resurface during politically charged times, serving to stoke fear and division among the public. Professor Harith Alani described Farage's statements as "textbook disinformation," highlighting the ease with which shocking claims can spread, regardless of their truthfulness.

Lies Debunked

The claims made by Nigel Farage regarding immigrants eating swans and carp in the UK have been thoroughly debunked by authoritative sources. There is no evidence to support these assertions, and they appear to be a rehash of long-standing myths aimed at demonising immigrant communities. The Royal Parks and RSPCA have both confirmed that no such incidents have been reported, reinforcing the conclusion that Farage's statements lack factual basis.
