Exposing Telford Labour’s Misleading Use of “Facts”

Labour-led Telford and Wrekin Council recently tried to claim that the rise in Universal Credit claimants is unsustainable, in response to a question from The Green Party of Telford and Wrekin.

But when Leader Cllr Lee Carter dodged the issue, choosing not to engage on a hot potato, he delegated responsibility to Labour Cllr Kelly Middleton. Neither Cllr Carter nor Cllr Middleton did their homework.

In addition to the figures we’ve already provided, here are a few more that suggest Labour locally and nationally are pulling the wool over people’s eyes:

For years, people have been moved from legacy benefits like ESA to Universal Credit. These numbers artificially inflate the “new” Universal Credit claimant counts.

So far, about 2.5 million people have been migrated to UC, with many financially worse off as a result. However, around 400,000 have been moved off ESA and have not applied for, or secured, UC.

Other numbers show that about 170,000 children in the poorest households have also lost out in the switch from Tax Credits to UC.

Most of these people—nearly 2.7 million—are either disabled or single parents, with an average income loss of £2,760 a year simply by moving from ESA or Tax Credits to UC.

Cllr Muddleton claims that a city the size of Leicester joining the UC ranks (about 373,000 claimants) is unsustainable—that’s only 13% of the migration figures. What about the others, 87% of the claimants, or 7 cities the size of Leicester migrating over to UC?

2.7 million people moving to UC from legacy benefits, average £2760 a year worse off, means the government is SAVING in the region of £7,452,000,000 (yes, seven billion 452 million) per year.

The evidence is clear: Labour appears to be using conservative scare tactics and fear to scapegoat the sick, disabled, and single parents in the eyes of the rest of the population.

We need local and national politicians who aren’t afraid of the truth, who won’t massage the figures, and who act with integrity and honesty to deliver for people—not just in Telford and Wrekin, but across the country.

We're not saying all Labour councillors and MPs are bad people; there are clearly some good ones. However, they are bound by the party whip system, just like most other parties, with the exception of one. They HAVE to follow the party line or face discipline. They can’t effectively serve residents with one hand tied behind their backs.

That party—the only one that doesn’t whip its members, councillors, and MPs—isn’t it time we asked which one it is?
