Davies Plea Falls on Deaf Ears
Minister Dodges Telford Hospital Question in House of Commons
House of Commons, Tuesday, 23rd July – Tension no doubt filled the stomach of Shaun Davies, Telfords Labour MP, as he asked his 3rd question since being elected.
Despite it being a mainstay of his election campaign, Davies, having twice failed to raise the thorny issue of A&E at our hospital, has finally managed to speak about the pressing concerns around the lack of fully functioning services in Telford today, Tuesday 23rd July 2024.
Davies, campaigned vociferously during the election, for returning services to our hospital. But as it was noted at the time, he failed to sign the NHS Pledge run by the campaign group We Own It, calling into question his true commitment to both the NHS and full services at The Princess Royal Hosiptal.
Davies directed his question to his own front bench stating "the last Conservative government made Telford the largest town without a fully functioning A&E. Will the health team meet with me and other Shropshire MPs to discuss this discredited and disgraceful decision?"
The absence of the Secretary of State for Health in the chamber placed the responsibility of response on a lesser Labour minister. The reply, however, failed to address the specific concerns raised by Davies.
Instead, the minister deflected, saying, "he knows what in fact we all know, what the entire country knows because we spent the last six weeks campaigning around the country, that across the country it's the same story. That's why we've committed to restore standards and that's why we will fix this broken NHS."
Did this answer satisfy Davies? It certainly won't satisfy the people Telford. The exchange highlights the ongoing struggle faced by residents of Telford and underscores the broader issues plaguing the National Health Service (NHS) across the country.
Without a firm commitment to meet and discuss the matter, it appears unlikely that Davies will secure the discussions he seeks anytime soon. The lack of a direct answer leaves the future of Telford's healthcare services in a continued state of uncertainty.
