Former Telford Reform Candidate Alan Adams Under Fire for Sharing Irresponsible and Controversial Statements

Alan Adams, a former Reform candidate for Telford in the 2024 General Election, has recently been embroiled in controversy for his role in spreading misleading information and endorsing extreme right-wing commentary. These actions have raised significant concerns about his political leanings and the ideologies he supports.


Misleading Public and Eroding Trust

Adams, on at least two occasions, has shared controversial material on social media in August 2024 following the riots that picked up the name of the reform leader "#FarageRiots".


One of these was a letter from reform MP Richard Tice, to Labour Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, expressing concerns over the lack of consequences for officers involved in the Manchester airport assaults, suggesting "police bow to rioters" pressure. This statement, linked to the recent far-right "#Farage Riots," raises several issues:

Misleading The Public

Conflating the Manchester assaults with "#Farage Riots" risks public misunderstanding. There was no link between the two seperate incidents, and is clearly an attempt at 'race baiting', and attempts to muddy the waters between the two very different incidents.


Eroding Peoples Trust and Potential to Undermine the Police

The wording of the public letter, has been designed to cast an already troubled police service in a very dark light, and the reader could be forgiven for misunderstanding that it would be the police themselves that decide upon the laying of charges against alleged perpetrators, and not the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service).

Deepen Polarisation

By choosing the words he did, and by Adams sharing these words on social media, the risk of deepening the societal divisions by linking unrelated events is only increased.

Responsible leadership should foster clear, evidence-based dialogue to address such issues effectively. By sharing this badly worded letter, Adams is reinforcing the flawed and irresponsible messaging within, and exposes him to claims that he is stoking the fire, and not being responsible to the communities in Telford.

Prior to sharing this letter, Alan Adams had put himself in the position of having his motivations and political leanings questioned, by sharing material from an extreme right wing commentator.


Endorsement of Matt Goodwin's Extreme Right-Wing Commentary

Adams has also come under scrutiny for his endorsement of a controversial YouTube video by Matt Goodwin. Adams' public affirmation of the video with a simple "well said" raises significant concerns.

The Controversial Figure: Matt Goodwin

Matthew Goodwin, an academic known for his right-leaning perspectives, has been a polarising figure in British politics. His work often delves into cultural and identity issues, often at the expense of addressing broader economic pressures. 


Critics have noted his tendency to support anti-migrant campaigns and right-populist sentiments. Goodwin's book, "Values, Voice and Virtue: The New British Politics," underscores his belief that the UK's elite is disconnected from the conservative views of the majority, highlighting a cultural divide.


Problematic Statements and Ideologies

Goodwin's recent video, endorsed by Adams, contains several statements that can be construed as racist, xenophobic, and discriminatory:

Racist Sentiments Goodwin's statements about immigrants and societal decay invoke fear and distrust towards migrant communities.

Xenophobic Narratives

The video emphasises "losing control of the borders" and promotes a divisive nationalistic agenda that undermines social cohesion.


By endorsing Goodwin's video, Adams implicitly aligns himself with these extreme right-wing ideologies. His support for content that promotes xenophobia and racial division raises serious questions about his suitability as a political representative. It is crucial for public figures to be mindful of the messages they amplify, as their endorsements can lend credibility to harmful ideologies.


The Implications of Adams' Actions

Alan Adams' praise for Matt Goodwin's controversial video, laden with racist and xenophobic rhetoric, is troubling. As is his sharing of Tice's letter. 

Such endorsements are not in line with the values of inclusivity and equality that should be upheld in modern political discourse. As a former candidate for public office, Adams' support for such extreme views is a disservice to the diverse community he once sought to represent. It is imperative that political leaders reject divisive and discriminatory narratives and instead work towards fostering unity and understanding in society and our communities.
