Unions Under Fire for Blocking Adoption of Disabled People's Manifesto

In a recent controversial move, influential teacher unions such as the National Education Union (NEU) and the NASUWT have faced heavy criticism for refusing to support the demands of the Disabled People's Manifesto, a crucial document advocating for inclusive education and fundamental reforms to empower disabled individuals. 

The manifesto, spearheaded by DPO Forum England with the backing of 40 disabled people's organizations (DPOs), has been a beacon of hope for the disabled community, calling for essential rights and support for Disabled and Deaf students in mainstream educational settings.


At the heart of the manifesto is a plea for every Disabled and Deaf student to receive appropriate assistance to not only attend but thrive in a fully inclusive mainstream education environment. This demand aligns with the overarching goal of the manifesto: to instigate a radical reform program encompassing representation, rights, independence, and inclusion. These reforms are specifically designed to combat systemic oppression and injustice faced by disabled individuals, aiming to dismantle disablist policy-making and create a more equitable society for all.

Despite the high expectations of disabled delegates and DPOs, the motion supporting the manifesto faced strong opposition from NEU, NASUWT, and even the TUC disabled workers' committee. The refusal of these influential unions to stand behind the transformative vision outlined in the manifesto has sparked outrage and disappointment within the disabled community and their advocates.

The actions of these unions raise serious concerns about their commitment to promoting inclusivity and equality within the education sector. By rejecting the demands of the manifesto, they are effectively hindering the progress towards a more accessible and empowering educational system for disabled students.
